The Rural Enterprise Development Initiative (REDI) is an extension service model designed to provide smallholder farmers and Farmers’ Based Organizations with a combination of business and technical skills training.
REDI focuses on five main rice and maize-producing regions in Ghana: the Upper East, Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Eastern, and Volta regions. Over the first five years, the initiative aims to work with at least 50,000 farmers. To establish a strong foundation for the REDI model, we began with a realistic approach, starting with 3,500 farmers in 2018, specifically in the Eastern, Upper East, and Volta regions.
REDI is poised to be a game changer in the agribusiness value chain. At MBC, we are committed to ensuring our success, which will have a positive impact on our farmers and stakeholders.
Components
Training for farmers
Two types of training were conducted throughout the training cycle: a general training module on technical rice and maize production, followed by specific modules on best practices. Farmers also received training in basic business management skills.
Specialized agro inputs and markets
REDI has partnered with certified agro dealers and off-takers, both locally and internationally, to supply farmers with quality agricultural inputs, including OCP fertilizer and certified seeds for rice and maize, as well as providing a market for their produce.
